Should Your Art Hobby Become A Creative Business?
Share

If you keep growing in your competency as an artist, someone might eventually come along and tell you to consider selling your art. An occasional sale is always great. But if you’re wondering if there might be more to your work, here are some things to consider before you start pursuing this as a side hustle or even a full-time business.
- You’re getting good feedback from others and even offers to pay for your work.
- Your art is starting to get you a steady income or, if it’s not yet generating income, you’re prepared to put in the work for it.
- You know how to set reasonable price points. Not just because you need to pay the bills, but because you know how to value both yourself and your work.
- You would much rather run your own business than work a regular full-time job.
- Would you still love your art even when things get tough and you’ve got to put in the hours? What was once something you did for fun or even self-therapy is now something you will depend on for income.
While there are a great many other things to consider, the abovementioned should be a great starting point for that honest conversation with yourself.
But do remember it’s alright if you just want your art to remain a hobby. There seems to be this constant, pervasive societal pressure that we monetise everything we have a decent level of competence in.
Some things in life can be just enjoyed without getting money involved.
