How To Stop Paint Beading On A Plastic Palette

I have a magic solution for this common but pesky problem.

The answer is actually dishwashing liquid!

  1. Just squirt a little dishwasher liquid on a dishwasher sponge (the one with a lightly rough side) and lightly scrub your plastic palette.
  2. Scrub it like you normally do for your dishes, paying extra attention to the wells and mixing area.
  3. Repeat process if beading still occurs.
  4. Let dry before using.

Plastic palettes bead because there’s a layer of manufacturing coating on it. Scrubbing it with dishwasher soap will help remove some of that coating and reduce the beading situation, but it will not remove it entirely.

Oddly enough what ultimately removes the beading is the constant usage of the palette. When you start breaking in your palette, you don’t clean it all the time so paint is left on the palette then rewet for use again the next day. The constant exposure of paint on the palette eventually seasons it such that it doesn’t bead up anymore.

So the best way to get rid of the beading issue is really to keep using the palette after the initial scrubbing process!

Let me know if you’ve tried it out or have other effective methods for this problem.
