Why You Should Use Mockups

When marketing a new design, you might start to wonder if you need to create mockups as part of your pitch.

I always recommend doing so.

Here are some reasons:

1. It looks more professional

A mockup shows your designs were well-conceived and made exactly for a certain product. By producing a mockup, it demonstrates that your design process was purposeful with a clear objective in mind. This also helps you stand out from the other designers who couldn’t be bothered with the effort taken to do a mockup.

2. Helps potential buyers visualise

People don’t just want designs that look good. They also want designs to fit into their overall aesthetic and lifestyle. Businesses want to know if your design fits their overall design language. Styling your mockup doesn’t just present your work in a more flattering light, it also helps buyers visualise how your work can either complement what they already have or seed ideas for future plans.

3. Saving time and money

Sometimes, what I imagined might look good didn’t actually pan out once it was put on a product. Some designs might work better on a duvet than a phone case. Mockups are a good way to test things out to make sure you didn’t go ahead with prototyping only to find it wasted time and money. It also means you and the client can sit down and work on the mockup in Photoshop until both are as satisfied as possible before moving to the physical production phase.

Mockups take effort.

But they give your business an extra layer of professionalism, help you market yourself and save you time and money in the long run.

If you need a list of mockups, I’ve compiled an ultimate guide for you. It includes all the direct links to the awesome mock-ups I use for my business and more! I made sure to throw in as many different categories of mock-ups as possible so you can pick and choose the ones that you need.
