3 Tips to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

What is imposter syndrome? Imposter syndrome involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite your experience and accomplishments. It makes you feel like you’re not good enough, and most unfortunately likes to rear its ugly head during important moments. What do we do when imposter syndrome comes knocking on our doors?

How to overcome imposter syndrome?

Invest in yourself.

The reason you’re feeling inadequate is because you are not confident. Pinpoint that feeling and zero in on what is making you feel that way, then make plans to overcome it. One way to do it is by practicing more (clock that 10,000 hours!) or taking a class or course to upgrade your skills so you feel more confident in yourself.

Take a social media break.

Social media is a double edged sword, and sometimes all that mindless scrolling only leads us down a rabbit hole of comparison and inadequacy. It’s good to take a social media break now and then, cleanse your system of all these negative comparative energy and fill your space with positive and uplifting energy. Try taking a walk, or reading books. I love to read illustrated books to learn more about how other illustrators and artists paint and their state of mind, so I can access that burst of inspirational creative energy and motivate myself to continuously show up and keep learning.

Keep on showing up, keep practicing and keep on trying.

There is no shortcut, but if you keep on showing up eventually you will see the difference in your skills. There is no greater confidence boost than seeing your work improve by leaps and bounds. This is why I always keep some of my old work around, 3 years later I can look at it again and see how far I’ve come.
